Opportunities for working with volume at school are not as easily achieved as at home. Your child should have numerous experiences with volume, comparing, and measuring with standard units.
Start young with their own set of measuring cups and spoons.
· Help your young child see two ½ cups fill one cup, four ½ cups fill that same one cup.
· Give them a plastic bowls, juice containers, and serving containers and have them guess how many cups it will take to fill the containers, then experiment filling them.
The more experience they have with various containers the quicker they will develop their intuitive understanding of volume.
Each meal you can give your child opportunity to use measurement while you cook. Always have a cup, measuring spoons and a ruler handy. Ask your child to measure out a cup of rice, macaroni, or beans. Scoop out a tablespoon on peanut butter, honey, or syrup.
